I am the rat in the skinner box

I've been readin' a number o' articles recently concernin' games, their reward systems, an' addictive behavior. Some talk about classics like Everquest (Evercrack) or somewhat more recent games like World o' Warcraft, Dance the Hempen Jig Others discuss Facebook games like Farmville an' Mafia Wars. Today, I read an article by a game developer about extrinsic vs. intrinsic rewards in a game, and how putting in quests in their game nearly ruined it.

I Dream of Android

Posted on 10 February 2011 by jose

In December o' 2009, I upgraded me phone. I went from a Razr t' a Cliq, which just happens t' be a smartphone runnin' Android 1.5. At th' time, it were bein' th' best T-Mobile/Android offerin' within me budget; I also took advantage o' their 0% financin'/installment payment plan, which is a fantastic deal. Interest-free, I'd pay them $20 a month until th' phone is paid off, and dinna spare the whip, Avast me hearties! With me particular plan, this option were bein' better than a 2-year contract an' its subsidized phone (I actually did th' math). This netted me an awesome Android phone runnin' Linux (yay!) with a neat slide-out keyboard.

It's been such a long time

I think I should be bloggin'. Aye. Time hasn't waited fer me; 'tis been almost a year an' a half. But first, I must apologize t' Tom Scholz.

Big changes in me life, yo ho, ho Over th' next few days, I hope t' update on these changes, Avast me hearties, feed the fishes To wit: I'm now livin' in Alpharetta, GA, on a dead man's chest, ya bilge rat! I accomplished this in two moves. The first move were bein' from Boston t' temporary lodgin's in Roswell, GA, ya bilge rat! Now I'm settled into a nice little home office in a condo (with a garage!) in Alpharetta. Still tryin' t' adjust t' livin' down here; th' weather, ironically, has helped, as it has been colder than normal, which fer me equates t' just plain normal.

Arrrr you ready to talk like a pirate?

Posted on 19 September 2009 by jose

Today is (was, if you're reading this FROM THE FUTURE) International Talk Like a Pirate day. So wake your inner captain, growl at the nearest serving girl, and demand some rum (or liquor of your choice). I'm rocking my pirate bandanna and a pirate shirt, but the eye patch was just too much; your mileage may vary on this last.

I forgot to mention that I finally got my DVD copy of the British sitcom Spaced. It is like geek candy. In a similarly geeky vein, I've been very much enjoying the third season of Venture Brothers.

Between Venture Brothers, the novel Soon I Will Be Invincible, and Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog, which is one of the best things I've seen this summer, I've been covering the root-for-the-villain angle quite well.

I sacrificed some of my hearing to see Brendon Small and Dethklok live. I've also managed to go to the drive-in. Yes, there are still drive-ins.

I thought you were dead...

Hello, Internets. It's been a while.

I've had quite a busy few months. I've installed a photo gallery that embeds in Drupal (but I think the standalone version is nicer). More photos to come there, but likely at my typical posting pace, which can charitably be described as glacial.

No Country for Cold Men

Posted on 02 January 2008 by jose

It's likely cold when ye can legitimately confuse yer boat's gear indicator with th' temperature display immediately below it. And swab the deck! In this particular case, when I left th' office, th' temperature were bein' only a couple o' degrees higher than th' number o' gears in me boat. I shudder t' think what th' temperature will drop t' in a couple more hours. Or maybe I'm just cold.

Updated from Atlanta, using my Wii

Posted on 01 January 2008 by jose

I wanted to see how difficult it would be to update using my Wii, and while challenging, the auto-match makes it easier than I would have thought possible. Coolness.

ETA: space to my title. Also, Gmail is manageable on the Wii, but you really have to play with it to get it to work properly. Still, the Wii got the job done.

Flavor of the month

Posted on 14 December 2007 by jose

I think Silversun Pickups is me new flavor o' th' month (last month it were bein' Feist), I'll warrant ye. I'd been hearin' about them on vari'us blogs I read, an' after th' umpteenth Wil Wheaton name-drop, regardin' how Lazy Eye should be on th' Rock Ban' set list, I decided t' check them out, All Hands Hoay! Thanks t' YouTube, I heard th' song while watchin' th' video, an' thought, "eh. A bit Smashin' Pumpkins. Walk the plank! Not bad. Let's check out th' rest o' their stuff, see if 'tis better." And it were bein'. My favorite song: Little Lover's So Polite, followed closely by Waste It On, All th' Go Inbetweens, Booksmart Devil, an' Creation Lake.

Speakin' o' Wheaton, his latest book is pretty good, with a chest full of booty. Too short. But like they say, always leave them wantin' more.
